The Texts I Actually Answer. And What They Tell Me About Your Family.

Part 2 of the Family Strategist Series
Most consultants have a closed-door policy when it comes to parents.
Not me. My door - real or virtual - is always open. And what comes through it on any given Saturday tells me everything I need to know about a family.
Just Another Saturday
I got off a Zoom this morning with a student who couldn't get her essay onto the page. Not because she doesn't know what she wants to say - she does. But the second she opens a document, everything locks. Analysis paralysis, full stop.
A few minutes after we hung up, her mom texted me. Not to ask how the call went. To share something - a piece of context about her daughter that only a mom sitting at that kitchen table would know. It reframed everything I had just seen. Changed my entire approach going into our next session. Mom was heading out on a business trip, watching her younger sons wrestle in the background, the weight of juggling all of it palpable even through a text. I jumped on a call. I could take one thing off her plate. So I did.
Later, a different mom texted about a course her kid was planning to drop. She'd overheard it mentioned at dinner - not a big deal, she thought. Except it would have been a real mistake, with consequences that wouldn't have shown up until it was too late to fix them. We caught it in time with a fast email to the student reminding her that a fourth year of foreign language was mandatory for her highly selective first choice school. No fights at dinner.
These moms weren't micromanaging. They were doing the opposite - trusting me with the inside information so they wouldn't have to make it an issue at home.
I field those texts. I take those calls. Because I know what they represent. A mom who reaches out isn't out of control. She's paying attention. She has information I need. And the families who trust me with it get better outcomes because of it.
Most consultants keep that door closed. I keep it open. Because I know what's on the other side of it.
This Goes Both Ways
Sometimes a parent needs to hear - gently, directly, from someone outside the house - that their fear is louder than their kid's voice right now. That the pressure they're carrying, even silently, is landing somewhere. That's a conversation that could blow up a dinner table. In my hands, it's just another Saturday.
They're not wrong for feeling it. They want what every parent wants - happiness, security, a future that looks okay. But there are moments in this process where the most loving thing I can do is hold the line. Say the thing. And do it with enough warmth and enough stories from the hundreds of families I've walked through this with, that they can actually hear it. (They do hear it. Eventually.)
That's the work. All of it. The student, the parents, the dynamic between them, and sometimes the dynamic between the parents themselves - I look at the big picture and keep everyone moving forward without making the tension worse. I am, in the truest sense of the word, the family's strategist. And sometimes their mediator.
Why Moms Carry This Differently
I want to speak directly to you for a minute.
By the time your kid is a junior, you've been so flooded with information, other people's opinions, and everyone else's outcomes that you've stopped trusting the one thing that has known your kid longer than anyone else in the room.
Your gut. And it's probably the most accurate data available.
One of the things I do - over the years I work with a family - is help moms trust themselves again. You know your kid. You've always known your kid. My job is to give that knowledge somewhere to go - and to help you stop looking left and right at everyone else's path, so you can focus straight ahead on what's right for yours.
That's not something I do for you. It's something I help you remember how to do for yourself.
I am the calm in the chaos.
But I wasn't always.
